Redskins Draft '10 Review

Written by Richie Tillman - Special Correspondant

Trent Williams,T, Round 1 Pick 4 Oklahoma - With the 4th overall pick, the Redskins select a great offensive tackle out of Oklahoma. He's a versatile linemen who has played both left and right tackle in college and should be suited well for Mike Shanahan's brand of football. He should be able to protect Donovan McNabb's blind side as well as pave the way for Clinton Portis. Excellent pick. Grade: A

Perry Riley, OLB, Round 4 Pick 103 LSU - With their 4th round pick, the Redskins selected Perry Riley, a very productive linebacker out of LSU. He's 6-1 and ran a 4.69 40. As a junior he collected 60 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and 1 interception. As a senior he racked up 90 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception and broke up 5 passes. He seems to always be around the ball and is decent enough in pass coverage. He could be a bit of a steal, being a very good backup and becoming a starter down the line. Grade: B+
Senior Stats: 90 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 5 pass break ups, 1 pick
Junior Stats: 60 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 pick
Sophomore Stats: 24 tackles
Freshman Stats: 4 tackles

Dennis Morris, TE, Round 6 Pick 174 Louisiana Tech - In the 6th round, the Redskins take one of the better pass catching tight ends in the country last season. He had 38 receptions for 623 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior. His 12 touchdowns led all I-A tight ends and was 8th nationally in receiving touchdowns. Shanahan plans to use him more as a blocking fullback in his scheme, but those hands suggest he should be a good receiver out of the backfield when called upon. Grade: B

Senior Stats: 38 receptions, 623 yards, 12 touchdowns
Junior Stats: 7 receptions, 158 yards, 1 touchdown
Sophomore Stats: 9 receptions, 79 yards
Freshman Season: 16 receptions, 284 yards, 3 touchdowns

Terence Austin, WR, Round 7 Pick 219 UCLA - Austin was a decent receiver at UCLA who can double as a punt and kick returner. Should add decent depth to the position and vie for a special teams spot. He was top 40 nationally in punt return average in 2009 and 2007. Grade: C+

Senior Stats: 37 receptions, 455 yards, 4 touchdowns, 9.15 punt return average, 24.09 kick return average
Junior Stats: 53 receptions, 460 yards, 1 touchdown, 9.52 punt return average, 24.11 kick return average
Sophomore Stats: 17 receptions, 248 yards, 10.03 punt return average
Freshman Stats: 2 receptions, 29 yards, 10 punt return average.

Erik Cook, C, Round 7 Pick 229 New Mexico - Cook has been one of the best Centers in the country over the last 3 years at New Mexico. He was a 3 year starter who is very versatile. He can play center, guard and left tackle. He should be a good utility lineman who could break through as a starter down the road. Grade: B

Selvish Capers, T, Round 7 Pick 231 West Virginia - With the final pick in the draft, the Redskins select another versatile lineman who can play multiple positions. He paved the way the past few years for Pat White, Steve Slaton and Noel Devine in West Virginia and ought to be a good fit for Shanahans running attack. Grade: B

With 3 offensive lineman selected and a tight end who will be turned into a blocking fullback, it's safe to say that Shanahan is gearing up the Redskins into a nasty, smash mouth running team similar to the ones he built in Denver. The future looks bright in the nation's capitol.

Special Thanks to Richie Tillman for this piece.
