Another Redskin loss

The Redskins fell to 4-10, turning in their worst performance in the last two years, loosing 45-12 to the New York Giants. It is reported that the Redskins were booed off the field at half time after a bizarre sequence in which Zorn twice in the final two seconds of the half approved a trick play, instead of a field goal, at the Giants 20-yard line. The play did not work, and punter Hunter Smith was hit hard, threw an interception and the half ended on the return, at that time the score was 24-0.

"We did poorly overall," Coach Zorn said. "I was really surprised and our players were as well because we have been putting together some pretty good performances." Defensive end Andre Carter commented: "It was a nightmare.” Cornerback Carlos Rogers: "It's embarrassing. To come out down 24-0, that's embarrassing. The last time we were on ESPN Monday night, we got embarrassed. I don't know what it is."

The 45 points scored by the Giants were the most allowed at FedEx Field in nine years, and the 33-point margin of defeat was the fourth largest in Snyder's tenure. The Redskins remain winless in Monday night home games since 1997. This is the Giants fourth victory in a row and eighth in the last nine games between the two teams. The Giants keep their play off hopes alive with the win with two games remaining in the regular season.

The Redskins' first four drives ended with punts. The Giants' first four drives: touchdown, touchdown, field goal and touchdown. The Giants posted the game's 16 initial first downs. One play summed up the game: down 24-0 with 2 seconds left on the clock in the first half, Coach Zorn decided not to attempt a field goal at the Giants 20 yard line, instead shifting the offensive line wide left and having holder Hunter Smith throw a Hail Mary pass that the Giants intercepted and returned 49 yards. "It was good defense - that's what hurt that play," Zorn said. "I contemplated after [the Giants] called time out just kicking the field goal, and the play was unique enough that I didn't think they saw what we were trying to do. They smelled it out quickly."

Some statistics about the first half: close to the end of the half the Giants had 226 total yards and the Redskins minus-2; with the score 24-0 in the second, the Redskins had no first downs; the Redskins did not gain a first down until there were only 3 minutes 33 seconds left in the first half; of the Redskins' 78 yards of offense before half time, 45 came on their final drive.

Eli Manning completed 19 of 26 passes for 268 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Manning had a quarterback rating of 144.4. Jason Campbell struggled against the Giants' pass rush. Playing with an injured shoulder, Campbell completed 15 of 28 passes for 192 yards. He threw a touchdown pass but also had two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown, and was sacked five times.

"It's the worst game since I've been here," Campbell remarked. "We got beat in every phase of the game. It was a total team loss. We had been playing so well the last four to five weeks and to do what we did tonight, I didn't see that one coming. We didn't even look like the same team that played the last four to five weeks."

"It all started with them having a flawless drive to start the game," Zorn said. "And then we went three-and-out and then we went three-and-out and then we went three-and-out and then it was 24-0."

The Giants' opening drive of 16 plays and 80 yards lasted 9:13, ending with a touchdown. Following a Redskins three-and-out, the Giants marched 63 plays on 11 yards to make it 14-0 . The Redskins gained a yard on their next possession, with the Giants scoring a field goal on their possession to make it 17-0. After another Redskins punt, the Giants scored another touchdown, 24-0.

The Redskins had the football to start the second half and after 86 yards in eight plays scored their one and only points of the game. The extra point was blocked. After another another 21 points by the Giants the game was mercifully over.
