Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter Volume 14, Number 9After a season of 2-6 and a four game losing streak the Redskins had a truly great victory, beating the Denver Broncos 27-17 in front of 85, 247 screaming fans. "It's been a long time," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "It's been a long time since we've had something really good like this happen. It makes you feel good to see guys as happy as you see them right now, and just everyone feeling like we accomplished something together. And we did.... It is more than a victory in some ways. Today we got to see what we can do, what we can be." Running back Ladell Betts in a rare starter position had 26 carries, 114 yards and one touchdown, with the Redskins scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter. Clinton Portis was still out suffering a concussion in the loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Jason Campbell stats were 17 of 26 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown pass in the first quarter. The game did not start out well for our Redskins. In the first quarter the Broncos score twice, once on a 40 yard touchdown pass and the other on a 75 yarder. The second quarter started 14-7. In this quarter the Redskins had a trick play in which the ball was snapped to punter Hunter Smith, who threw it to Mike Sellers for a touchdown. At that point the score was 14-14 with 6:39 remaining in the first half. "It's not that we were trying to trick anyone, we had a legitimate play," Smith said. "Whether they knew how we lined up or not really didn't matter. All we were trying to do was run a play. They couldn't game plan for that." Hunter Smith is the only Redskins player to both run and pass for a score this year. The Broncos scored a field goal to end the half 17-14. Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton threw for 193 yards, but suffered an ankle injury, and did not return after half time. He was replaced by Chris Simms (3-13), the Broncos only had 36 yards in the second half, and never inside the Redskins 46 yard line. The fourth quarter was all Redskins. They first scored on a Shaun Suisham field goal to bring the game to 17-17. Betts scored a touchdown with 2:49 remaining in the game to put the Redskins in the lead for the first time in the game, and Suisham had his second field goal of the fourth quarter with 1:15 left in the game. About his performance Betts remarked: "It's not all about me, it's really a team effort, and the guys up front blocked and did a great job. With Clinton out, everybody is just trying to do everything we can to help. The guys up front stayed on their blocks, I read 'em and we did it together." Lets all hope defensive lineman Lorenzo Alexander is correct when he says: "Nobody in here is going to lay down,. No matter what anyone thinks, we have way too many guys in here, as far as character guys, to ever let that happen. I know a lot of guys in here and I just know we won't do that. Nobody is going to lay down. We have too many guys who are going to pull guys up." The Redskins still have Chris Samuels, Chris Cooley and Clinton Portis out, and remember Daniel Synder is still the owner. All this set aside, hopefully, this is the beginning of a turn around. A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEAt last !! Redskin fans were actually smiling as the game ended. VICTORY !! A small ray of hope that the remainder of the season will show that the Redskins can be competitive and rack up some more "W's". It was a happier crowd today at F&F as 45 members celebrated and sang loudly. The Fan Club shirt was won by Mark and Jean, Bob, Bea and Steve won the Trivia Square game. My thanks to Tommy for filling in for Brendan and to Rita who sold raffle tickets for the Hogette Bobbleheads. The Christmas Raffle is now officially under way and we are hoping for even more items.
