Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter Volume 14, Number 8

November 11, 2009 Honoring Veterans Day

A Statistic that fairly well illustrates what the game was like was that at the end of the first half the Redskins had 69 total yards and 69 yards in penalties. The half time score was 24-3. About the penalties London Fletcher said: "We weren't very disciplined in the first half. We kind of lost our poise in some situations."

One example was on the Falcon’s first possession of the game, it was 4th down on the Redskins 8 yard line. Defensive lineman Haynesworth jumped off sides. Instead of a Falcon time out and a field goal, it was now first down on the Redskins 4. Falseness went in for a touchdown. Frustrated defensive end Andre Carter remarked: "It's just mental. We've done it since [training camp]. You got to be smart. . . . You have to key the ball."

On the Falcons next possession they were punting, when Redskins safety Reed Doughty lined up in the neutral zone, allowing another first down.

Another penalty came on a third down, and an incomplete pass the Falcons would have been forced to punt, however, defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander threw Falcons quarterback Ryan to the ground, drawing a roughing-the-passer penalty. It is reported that Brian Orakpo saw the penalty flag and shook his head in disgust. On that drive the Falcons scored a field goal, and mercifully the first half ended.

Jason Campbell was sacked five times in the game, and twice knocked out of the game. To date Campbell has been sacked 25 times, third most in the NFL. For the entire last season Campbell was only sacked 16 times and in 2007 he was sacked only 21 times. Last year Campbell was sacked four times in only one game, this year he has been sacked five or more times three times. The offensive line is missing assignments, with poor execution. The offensive line was so bad that one sports writer wrote: “ Campbell could have retained a personal-injury lawyer at halftime to sue his own teammates and nobody would have blamed him.” Another wrote: “No one would have blamed quarterback Jason Campbell if he wanted to sue his own line for reckless endangerment.”

Tackle Stephon Heyer commented: "Everybody's just got to know where you're supposed to be. That was the case and the situation a couple of times in our first half. A lot of people were missing assignments and just weren't on the same page." Added center Casey Rabach: "Our job is to protect Jason. Our job, point blank, is to keep Jason from getting hit. First half, five sacks. That's not doing your job. That needs to be fixed. Until we fix that, we're going to be struggling.... "It comes down to guys doing their job. That's what it is. This isn't play-calling, this isn't anything to do with the front office. Today, it's just us doing our job. Go out there and block the man in front of you and let Jason throw the ball downfield."

And there is the question: How many more games are the Redskins going to win? Apart from the Oakland Raiders, there are no foreseeable wins left. And now, I would not look pass the Raiders. It looks like the Redskins will be playing for their jobs and reputations. No one in the media thinks Coach Zorn will be here next year. So the next coach may be asking “did you quit or didn't you?
