Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter Volume 14, Number 6“How low can they go?”, and “Rock bottomless” were headlines in the Washington papers, as the Redskins lost for the fourth time this season to a winless team. Coach Zorn, frustrated, took the blame for the lost. "Nobody has any more responsibility than I do," Zorn said. "That's the way I look at it. I've got to come up with answers. And I will." It was reported that following the Redskins 14-6 loss to the Chiefs, Coach Zorn met with Vinny Cerrato (Executive VP of football operations) and was told to give up the offensive play calling duties. Recently hired consultant Sherman Lewis in Washington less than two weeks, in the position of “offensive consultant”, is expected to assume the play calling role. Lewis called the offensive plays for Green Bay, Minnesota and Detroit before leaving coaching after the 2004 season. Another issue the Redskins need to deal with is who will be the quarterback in the Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jason Campbell’s position was put into question as a result of Sunday's loss, as Zorn benched him at half-time in favor of Todd Collins. However, even with Todd Collins the Redskins offense continued to flounder. The offensive line has not been improved in the last two years and now has been reduced to a makeshift assortment of offensive linemen. Campbell commented that he was surprised that Coach Zorn would no longer call the offensive plays. "Right now, I can't tell you where the issues start at and what to do about them," Campbell said. "It's the most awkward position to be in as a team. We've all talked about it as teammates and we all can't put a finger on it. You can't point to any one person. Right now, it's just a crazy situation, a tough situation, and I don't think anyone knows how to fix it." It's the second time this month that Coach Zorn’s position as the Redskins head coach has been weakened. On Oct. 6, Dan Snyder brought in Lewis, a coordinator familiar in the West Coast offense. If communications can not get any worst Lewis had not heard about the move. "I'm just sitting here watching the game film, trying to correct it," Lewis said. "I haven't heard anything." And communications the way it was, the team had not been told of the decision, they learned of the move slowly as the news leaked out. Many players said they were surprised. "He hasn't been a terrible play-caller," wide receiver Antwaan Randle El said. "He's been a pretty good play-caller. It's not, you know, all him. You know what I mean? He's made some great calls and he has some good ideas." Players insisted accountability is team wide. "I feel bad for Coach Zorn," Cooley said. "I think in a time of crisis, which we're definitely in, I think you have to look at players." I think you got to look at guys like me and say, 'They have to make big plays for us.' You can't look at coaching and play-calling and say 'this is what's costing this team.' " Here come the stats: The defense managed five sacks and held the Chiefs to 265 yards. The Redskins converted 2 of 14 third-down attempts, had time of possession less than 23 minutes and totaled just 147 yards passing. Rushing, excluding Clinton Portis's 78-yard run in the third quarter, the Redskins had just 40 yards. Campbell's offense had just one first down until the Redskins' final drive of the half. In the closing minutes, trailing 3-0, Washington reached the Chiefs 36-yard line, but Campbell threw an interception to end the half. Collins completed 6 of 14 passes for 75 yards and a 60.1 passer rating. Campbell was 9 of 16 for 89 yards with a 46.1 rating. In five fourth-quarter possessions, Collins couldn't once get his unit across midfield. The last points of the game was a Chiefs field goal and a safety against the Redskins. Todd Collins completed a 42-yard throw on his first pass. But thereafter he was 5 for 13 for only 33 yards and got caught for a safety. For the 28th straight game, the Redskins’ defense has allowed 28 or fewer points, the longest streak in the NFL. However, with guard Randy Thomas out for the year, and tackle Chris Samuels out indefinitely, there simply is no Redskins attack. As has been pointed out here before, fans should look at Snyder and Cerrato far more than Zorn for a reckoning. From their point of view it's somebody else's fault, and that somebody will undoubtedly be Jim Zorn. A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEBobbe, Gary, Bonnie, and Tommy decided to go on vacation to Tennessee (in this weather?)
