Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter Volume 14, Number 5

October 16, 2009

The Redskins suffered another defeat against a previously winless team despite leading 17-2 early in the third quarter, and squandering that 15 point lead.

Special team mistakes put the Redskins in difficult positions in the second half. Redskins scored a touchdown on their second possession of the third quarter going ahead 17-2. Immediately following this, special teams allowed a 55 yard kickoff return, setting up the Panthers at the Redskins 40. A few plays later they scored their first touchdown, 17-9.

On the Panthers next possession they scored a field goal, score 17-12. The final touch down was set up when the Panthers recovered a muffed punt that hit off Byron Westbrook's leg as he was being blocked and gave the Panthers the ball at the Redskins 12 yard line. Two plays later, Panthers ran in for the go ahead touchdown, 20-17.

"I think we really pride ourselves on making teams kick field goals or not get into a rhythm. We allowed two scores when they got in the red zone, and that's not us. You look at the second half, and it was very disappointing ", Redskins linebacker London Fletcher continued. “You're either frustrated or you're not. We are."

The Redskins did contain two of the Panthers' top offensive players: DeAngelo Williams was held to 40 rushing yards on 18 carries and Steve Smith to 65 yards on five receptions. The Redskins stopped four straight running plays after the Panthers had a first-and-goal at the Washington 2 in the second quarter. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall returned an interception 44 yards to the Carolina 1 in the third quarter, setting up a Clinton Portis touchdown that made it 17-2.

"Frustration is part of the game," said DeAngelo Hall. We didn't make the plays we needed to make. We had them right where we wanted them."

Defensive end Andre Carter, who had 2 1/2 sacks, said: "We play a good first half and don't do the little things in the second half or vice versa. It was a disappointing loss. Carolina came back and did what they needed to do.

Coach Zorn of this loss commented: "Oh, yeah, it hurts deeply. I feel sick myself," he said. "I know how hard these guys work to get ready. I've just got to discover within myself how to get this thing turned around."

A Washington Post columnist, Thomas Boswell wrote in an article entitled “Chaos Theory”, that six years ago Joe Gibbs returned to “restore adult supervision” to the Redskins organization. Twenty-one months after Coach Gibbs is gone, the team is once again on a “greased slope toward mockery.” After loosing to another winless team is Boswell correct or not? And is it all Coach Zorn’s fault? He was a quarterback coach, hired as offensive coordinator, and then promoted to head coach when nobody else wanted the job. There are those who think he is out of his depth as a NFL head coach. This all true, however, many are pointing to Daniel Snyder and Vinny Cerrato as the real culprits in the chaos theory. I am one of them. Who hired Steve Spurrier, and forced out Marty Schotenheimer (after a record 8-3), Gregg Williams and Al Saunders? For a more in-depth look at this question, read Bosewell’s column online at WashingtonPost.com

A MESSAGE FROM BOBBE

Sixty-six rollicking Redskin fans jammed the Redskin Room for our Annual Tailgate Party. A buffet was set out and enjoyed by all. I only wish that we had a victory to cheer about and not another loss. Who do you think will go first ? Vinnie, Jim or Jason ? I'm just happy that tomorrow I won't have to suffer through all the headlines, articles and opinions that will circulate around D.C.

Our BIG winner of the day was SCOTT who took home the Redskin wall mirror. Thanks to everyone for supporting this raffle. And thanks too to Tommy for taking our group photo and all the new photos on our web site. If you want to download a copy of the group photo please email Bonnie at bgr1350@verizon.net. A special thank you goes to Jeff Valcourt for donating some very collectible "Hogette Bobble Heads" for future raffles and for the calendars given out at the Tailgate party. The "give away" raffle went well -- hope you got an item to add to your Redskin collection. Trivia square winners were: Hannah (2), Nick and Kathy.

Next Sunday kickoff is at 1 p.m. against the Chiefs. Bea and Bob will be filling in for me and will be doing the newsletter info for the next 2 games as I will also miss the Monday night game on October 26th. Keep an eye on the schedule since the week after that (11/1) is a bye week.
