Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter Volume 14, Number 2The Redskins narrowly avoided a catastrophe Sunday, beating the St. Louis Rams 9-7. As the Redskins left the field Sunday afternoon, the fans were booing their team. The reason: the Redskins manage only nine points on five trips inside the red zone against the Rams! Many thought, myself included, that there were too many would be touchdown drives that dissolved into field goals. They dominated the game in all categories, but just could not get the football in the end zone. The statistics look just fine. Washington gained 362 total yards, held the ball nearly 10 more minutes than the Rams, and had four possessions of at least 60 yards. The Redskins put the game away with a 78-yard drive that ended on fourth down at the 2 with less than 2 minutes to play, leaving the Rams not enough time to score. Shaun Suisham kicked field goals of 21, 28 and 23 yards. Failing to score a touchdown against the Rams which only had two victories last year, left the Redskins in a somber mood. In the post game news conference, tight end Chris Cooley, who had seven, catches for 83 yards, remarked: "Everyone was a little down in here." Cooley later said: "I understand that they want us to beat the Rams by 40, but we still won, and if we continue to win games, that's great. The booing was unnecessary.... We did very well. We just weren't able to punch it in." He added: "I thought we were much more consistent today. Up and down the field we had a lot of consistency. Jason did a great job protecting the ball. Other than the Santana Moss fumble, we really protected the ball. We made a lot of first downs.” (All that and no touchdowns. Continuing, he said: "Would I like to score? Of course I'd like to score three or four touchdowns, which we should have done today. But it didn't happen, and we still won. And I think the offense has a lot of confidence about what we did. When we watch the film, it'll look much better than we already think it is." There was a moment in the press conference, when special teams coach Danny Smith spoke up saying: 'Well, we kicked three damn field goals,"' and the team laughed. "We did what we had to do to win this game," center Casey Rabach said. "You can't keep on doing this, that's for sure." On Sunday’s game Coach Zorn commented: "I have got to look at this thing very hard because it is my responsibility. I can wave all kinds of magic wands, but I have to come up with the right play." More than a few thought Coach Zorn’s play calling left something to be desired. Two examples: on third and 5 in the red zone and Coach Zorn has Clinton Portis throwing the ball. Also in the final two minutes he goes for the touchdown. Remember the Redskins are two point up and two minutes to go. Kick the field goal and force the Rams to score seven points. On a sad note right guard Randy Thomas may be out for the season with a strained right tricep. It was reported that he will be evaluated Monday. A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEIt wasn't very pretty BUT we'll take a win any way the team can get one. I'm sure we are all hoping that this is the beginning of a long winning streak. The Redskin Room at F&F was "jumping" on Sunday as 54 fans gathered with even more fans in the main dining room -- a good turnout!
