Bradenton Redskins Fan Club NewsletterRedskins Lose Season Opener to Giants Giants 23, Redskins 17 The game was never as close as the score may indicate. The Redskins were playing catch-up football from the very beginning. In the first quarter the Giants time of possession was 12 minutes 11 seconds to the Redskins 2 minutes and 49 seconds. About this Coach Zorn said: "We had four plays in the first quarter. I know that the time of possession must have been lopsided until we started moving the ball in the second half. Four plays and the quarter was over. That hurt us a little bit. Redskin’s cornerback Carlos Rogers commented: "They just did whatever they wanted to do. Offense, defense, whatever. I don't know why it is, but they just made the plays. I wouldn't say they're a better team, but they play better against us." The biggest momentum killer of the game was Giants defense lineman Umenyiora's second-quarter return. Campbell was preparing to pass at the Redskins 48 yard line, when Umenyiora beat left tackle Chris Samuels around the corner, knocked the ball out of Jason Campbell's hands and scooped up the ball and ran in for a touchdown. Campbell held it too long. Umenyiora was credited with a sack, forced fumble, fumble recovery and a touchdown. Coach Zorn defended Campbell in the after game press conference saying: "The route was covered down field. The coverage took the deeper part of the route. Jason was doing the right thing, looking for the underneath, the check-down, and either it got screened or he couldn't see it. He still hung on to the ball. He's got to get rid of the ball. The protection on that particular play was outstanding." Jason Campbell said. "It was play action, and I was trying to hit Cooley on a deep shot across the field. I tried to step up in the pocket and I never felt the guy on my back. I just have to feel him, step up in the pocket and get rid of the ball." Campbell completed 19 of 26 passes for 211 yards, with one touchdown in the fourth quarter and one interception. The quirkiest play for the Redskins was on its first touchdown. Punter Hunter Smith ran an eight-yard run on a faked field goal attempt with 33 seconds remaining in the opening half. "We just saw something this week that we could kind of go after," said Smith "Just for the past week we've been looking at it and practicing it, and it worked just like we practiced it." The play that seems to reflect the Redskins performance was when Giant's receiver Manningham took a short pass from Eli Manning. The receiver knocked down Fred Smoot at the line of scrimmage, avoided a push out attempt near the sideline by Andre Carter at the 20, and a quick stutter step to avoid a tackle by DeAngelo Hall for a touchdown. The Redskins had THREE opportunities to stop Manningham and didn't. The Redskins had 272 running yards, with Portis gaining 62 yards on 16 rushes. Wide receiver Santana Moss had only two catches for 6 yards. Moss exchanged blows with Giants cornerback Corey Webster early in the second quarter and they had to be separated. Both received a flag and ended with off setting penalties. This is not the end of the world, only the first of sixteen games. The Redskins defense, ranked No. 4 a year ago, should cause some havoc with Haynesworth and first-round draft pick Brian Orakpo. And with second year wide receiver Malcolm Kelly providing Jason Campbell the big receiver the offense has been missing, the future looks promising. The offensive line on the other hand is the biggest question mark. A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEI know one game doesn't make a season but we saw enough of these type games over the last couple of years to know where the season is heading if the Skins continue to play "lack luster" football. Come on guys -- you're better than what you showed us Sunday. Get it together. We did have 40 fans come together for this first game and hope MORE of you will join with us in the coming weeks. Lots of familiar faces were missing; where were you? We need our room to be "rock 'n rolling" every week. Our servers Sunday were Brian and Eddie and they did a great job. Next Sunday F&F is putting a few snacks out for us and will be asking "TRIVIA" starting at noon and leading up to kickoff at 1:00pm. Come on out! I was asked about members purchasing Fan Club shirts. Our first order will be placed in early November. Shirts are $45.00 and come in burgundy, black or white -- they are embroidered with the Bradenton Redskin Fan Club logo and your name. Please pay when you place your order. We will continue to put a Fan Club shirt in the raffle for each HOME game. Tickets are now available for the "one of a kind" wall mirror pictured on our web site home page. Drawing is October 11th. SUPPORT YOUR CLUB! Fans, please remember that the funds from our weekly raffle enables our club to bring you three free catered parties each season. We need you to donate items for these weekly raffles and the special Christmas raffle. If you can’t find any Redskins memorabilia locally, you can donate cash. Bob and Bea are going to Washington D.C. soon and will use your cash donations to purchase some item there where they are plentiful. Our 2009 TAILGATE PARTY will be held at F&F on October 11th. More details in weeks ahead. Rodney-your Fan Club shirt is in. See Bobbe or Bonnie when you come to the next game.
