Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 16Redskins 24, 49ers 27 The Redskins started the season with great success, with a record of 6-2. However, the Redskins did a flip flop to 2-6 in the second half of the season. With a win Sunday Coach Zorn could have become the first coach in his first year as a Redskins coach to finish north of .500 since George Allen and the Skins could have had their first back-to-back winning season since 1999. “It wasn't merely about depressing losses to the Rams and Bengals. Even the tough games, the Steelers, the Ravens, I just feel like we're so close," Zorn said. "Not much to say. It was a promising season at the beginning," Randy Thomas lamented. "And we laid an egg in the second half." "Say we beat the Bengals and the Rams, yeah, you can ask yourself, 'Would we have played with more urgency and won today?' " speculated Chris Wilson. "But that's just another what-if. And we've had a lot of those.... Bottom line, if 'what if' was a fifth [of alcohol], we'd all be drunk now." Of the Redskins season play strong safety LaRon Landry commented: "Like I've been saying, 'It's all about attitude.' I guess our mindset just isn't there. You can't say we're going to go back and watch tape and correct it for the next game, because there is no next game. But we can't keep doing this next season. This has to change." Clinton Portis led the Redskins’ ground game, and the entire NFL for several weeks early in the season, and he finished the season with more than 1,400 rushing yards. Kicker Shaun Suisham is the first Redskin with consecutive 100-point seasons since Chip Lohmiller in 1991-92. Andre Carter's sacks made him the first Redskin to lead the team three years running since Dexter Manley (1984-86). However, he led the team with only four sacks, the Redskins' lowest total since the NFL made sacks an official stat in 1982. Santana Moss passed Michael Westbrook for eighth place on Washington's career list with 279 catches. He passed,1000 yards receiving in a season for the third time in his eight-year career and second time with the Redskins. Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El set career highs with 53 catches and four touchdown receptions. Randle El said: "When you think about the first half of our season and the second half of our season, career highs don't mean nothing if you're not winning. Being a playoff team, that's what you want, so you can't worry about your statistics. That's just not what it's about." Tight end Chris Cooley established career-highs of 83 catches and 849 receiving yards. Quarterback Jason Campbell 3,245 passing yards were the most by a Redskin since Brad Johnson threw for 4,005 in 1999. And Campbell had only six interceptions, this stat may be the reason the Redskins avoided a loosing record. Heading into Sunday’s game his QB rating was 84.3. This season Campbell has been put into a position of a running quarter back several times. "He dramatically improved himself in getting free, making a decision to run up field," Coach Zorn said. "In the beginning of the year, he didn't lack the talent, he just lacked the encouragement. He proved he has that dimension. It creates a tremendous weapon for us.” It became a team joke that he did not know how to slide at the end of a run, that he looked like a statue collapsing in stages. "Today (Sunday), I slid one time. That might be the first all season," he said, laughing. "It kind of shocked me." The one sure thing you can say about Campbell is that he is durable. He played all sixteen games standing straight up. On his game Campbell commented: "I'll always look to pass the ball first. I have areas to improve. I'd like to spread the ball out further down the field next year. We have the [receivers] who can become guys who can do that.” Both offensive and defensive teams are showing their age. The whole team was constructed along win-now rationale. Now with a record of 2-6 in the last eight games Coach Zorn is talking about “building a foundation.” This Redskins season there were ups and downs. An up was that the offense did not commit a turnover the first five games of the regular season. But a down was that this team barely beat anybody by more than a few points, never scored 30 in any game, averaged just 10 points a game from Nov. 3-Dec. 21, and the Redskins did not have a single win over a team with more than nine wins. Because of their 8-8 record the Redskins will get a higher pick in the NFL draft in April. And they will get a weaker schedule next year playing Lions and Rams instead of the Seahawks and Green Bay Packers.

Commentary by EddieWhat a dissapointing turnaround to what started out as one of the most exciting seasons...First the choice of Jim Zorn was a head scratcher going from Off. Coordinator to Head Coach, but after more review his West Coast style was very promising and exciting. Second our draft class seemingly was amazing at the time (except for not drafting any defensive ends) Next we got Jason Taylor and then Monk and Green were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Then we started the season 6-2 with Clinton Portis heading towards NFL MVP And then it all fell apart going 2-6 to end the season. Here are my keys to a successful Redskins future: 1. Our Defensive was probably the highlight of our team but could we please mix it up a little! I mean why can't we implement fancy schemes like the Steelers and Ravens do with Twists and Stunts - Exotic Blitzes! The cover 2 can only last so long when the offense goes 3 and out so often, our defense gets too tired not to mention our D-line is the weakest part. Washington placed 28th in the league in sacks with a measly 24 while Dallas led the league with 59! 2. We need to hire an offensive coordinator such as Mike Martz that can call plays from up in the booth. How many times this year did it seem like Zorn called the wrong play at the wrong time? 3. We need to see the West Coast Offense! Everytime a good defense blitzed us it seemed like we were clueless, why don't we have a dump off guy or screen setup every play? Give the rookies a chance and did anyone else notice how much Cooley was used this year for blocking? He is getting to be a decent blocker but he is a great receiver that can get YAC and score TDs! 4. We need to have better competition in special teams - kicker, punter, and return guy. Why wasn't Devin Thomas given more chances at returning balls? He was great at it at Mich St. and look at what other rookies like DeSean Jackson and Eddie Royal did for their teams. I guess we wait for the April Draft for our next event, lets hope we address the Offensive and Defensive Lines.
GO SKINS!!!!!!!!!
