Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 15This Win Goes To the Defense Redskins 10, Eagles 3 The defense once again won the game. The defense, now fifth in the NFL in yardage allowed and sixth in points permitted per game, were the reason for the win. The Eagles were held to a measely 249 yars. It was the defense that put the Redskins a 10-0 advantage on the first possession in the second half, after Portis scored on a 1-yard run set up by linebacker London Fletcher's fumble recovery and return to the Eagles' 18 yard line. It was punter Ryan Plackmeier who repeatedly pinned the Eagles inside their own 20-yard line. If their were three key players in yesterdays game my vote goes to LaRon Landry, Jason Taylor and big kudos to London Fletcher. Landry had a tackle on Reggie Brown, in the final seconds of the game, the tackle a yard shy of the goal line preserved the win. Taylor forced a fumble which resulted in the Redskins only touchdown and had two sacks. Landry later said: "I knew what they needed. If he didn't get past me, he didn't get a touchdown. And he wasn't going to get it." Of his fellows members of the defense Fletcher said: "That was some dominating defense. We showed how we felt about Coach Zorn with the way we practiced all week and the way we played today." Fletcher had six tackles in this game and remains the defensive signal caller and the leading tackler in the NFL in this decade. Thursday he was named as an alternate for the Pro Bowl for the eighth time, yet never once a Pro Bowler. "I don't know if it is because I wasn't a first-round draft pick, I don't do some kind of dance when I make a 10 yard tackle, I don't go out and get arrested.... You look at my body of work for 11 years," said Fletcher, "I'm not going out causing a lot of controversy, holding a private meeting with the coordinator saying this, this and this, causing a lot of strife on my team. [So] I don't garner a lot of attention." "Everybody was glad he spoke up," said Griffin. "I should have said something and I didn't. Players like London who are respectful of the game don't get the credit." What I didn’t know was that a great deal of the season, Fletcher has spent much of the week with a medical boot so his foot can heal enough to allow him to play on Sundays. Last week, Fletcher finally felt good enough to practice. Then, he spent much of the game chasing Eagles Brian Westbrook, who was held to an paltry 45 yards rushing on 12 carries, and 71 yards on pass receptions, 47 of them on a play when Fletcher wasn't assigned to him. About the game Portis said: "Once we figure out the system and our young guys come along, everything will move faster. We needed this win. We need to finish strong so we can come back next year feeling good about ourselves." "It was good to rebound, because we need to defend our home," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "For us to finish the season on a win here at home is good, and it's even better that we beat the Eagles, because they are a good team that was playing good football." This past week the Redskins fell out of the playoffs due to the intricacies of the NFL tiebreaker rules, as the Atlanta Falcons' win over the Minnesota Vikings dashed Washington's own slim mathematical chances at a playoff berth. The Redskins can finish 9-7 with a win next Sunday afternoon at San Francisco. As I look over the season, I am remembering the losses to the lowly St. Louis Rams and Cincinnati Bengals. Through sixteen weeks, those two teams have combined for just five wins. With those wins and a win next week, the Redskins would be 11-5. Now, that’s a season! The Redskins offense has averaged only 10 points in the last four weeks after averaging 20 for the first eight weeks. It remains to be seen whether Zorn will return next season. It was reported that Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' executive VP of football operations, said on his radio show last week that the team has had no discussions about Zorn's future. A MESSAGE FROM BOBBETalk about a close play at the goal line !! That final play had us holding our breath. Put this game in the WIN column --too bad it won't make a difference in the final outcome. But, it has been a fun season for all the members who gather each week to laugh, cheer, eat and drink together. We all hope the Bradenton Redskin Fan Club will continue to meet each week next season and that YOU will be in attendance each and every game. There were 43 members in attendance this past Sunday and we enjoyed having all our visitors from out-of-state and out-of-country. Trivia winners were Ed, Bill and Don and the club shirt was won by Ed. Next week is the final game for this season and the autographed Billy Kilmer jersey will go to one lucky fan. Tickets are 3/$10 Please support your club !!! Watch this website for info on the NFC Championship Party hosted by our Club. It will be held at the River Club (same location as this year's tailgate). Date, time and menu will be posted ASAP. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all and plan to attend the final season game; Sunday, December 28th -- 4 p.m.-- F&F HTTR
