Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 14Redskins lose to lowly Bengals After starting the season 6-2, the Redskins' record drops to 7-7 with an ugly 20-13 loss to the awful “Bungles”, leaving their chances slim to get a NFC playoff spot. The Bengals had lost their last two previous games by a score of 69-6. The Redskins did not play well in a game they had to win. From the start they were sluggish, giving the Bengals a 17-0 lead. At one point the Redskins cut the lead to 17-10 at half time. Watching that game it seemed that whatever the Redskins did it was not enough. Little disasters kept happening. For instance, Santana Moss who caught seven passes for 72 yards and a 28 yard punt return. However, trailing 17-6, he celebrated his own touchdown catch by pulling a towel from the belt of his uniform and pretending to shine his gold shoes in the end zone as an official stood nearby, drawing a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the ensuing kickoff. Showmanship is ridiculous when a one-win team is thumping you. In a game when the Redskins do not line up correctly for two penalties, boot an onside kick directly out of bounds and, fumble two inches from the end zone, showmanship needs to be left at the front gate. Later in the game, the Redskins were a few feet of the Bengals end zone and appeared to score the game tying touchdown, only to have the Bengals challenge the score, saying fullback Mike Sellers was tackled inches short of the goal line. A replay upheld the challenge and on the next play fumbled the ball. Rock Cartwright had a 36.4-yard average on five kickoff returns. After Cartwright's longest kickoff return of the season, that put the Redskins on the Bengals 13 yard line, near the end of the game, the Skins could not convert it to a touchdown. One reason was a delay of game penalty and Washington settled for Shaun Suisham's 36-yard field goal with just 1 minute 43 seconds to play. That ended the scoring. Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis carried the ball 25 times. After the game he said: "We didn't execute. You can't put that on the coaches. It was us on the field." Backup Ladell Betts, carried just twice. Portis gained 77 yards for a 3.1-yard average per carry. The Redskins, a proud veteran team, know they are running out of playoff chances. Nineteen Redskins players were in the game had at least seven pro seasons. "People talk about whether our coaches are good enough," one veteran commented. "Man, look around. This is a team of coaches. Nobody should have to tell us how to play this game." "Days like this, you know time is against you. You start the year 6-2. It's right there for us. Then you come here, half-empty stadium, no noise to overcome and lose to a team with one win. It hurts," guard Randy Thomas said. "If we were just a bad football team, you wouldn't take it so hard. We're so close to it. We had the same talent when we were 6-2," linebacker London Fletcher said. "We're going to replay games in our minds and say, 'I can't believe that happened.'" "We're way better than this. It's about us not playing up to our level," Santana Moss complained. "We should be able to BS at times and still win games." That, actually, is exactly what the Redskins can't do. This season the Skins have faced Detroit (0-14), St. Louis (2-12), Cincinnati (2-11-1) and Seattle (3-11). Record: 2-2 with a mere 75-73 point differential. Complacency against bad teams, and “BS at times” has no place on this football team. "So many little things occurred throughout the course of the game that we must look at," Zorn said. "We must play better if we want to earn the right to win. You have to earn a win in this league. We must play better if we are going to earn the right to win. We certainly didn't earn the right to win today. " Will Zorn have the time to continue his west coast offense? Probably yes. Zorn when asked about his job security replied: "There will be speculation, conversation. That's the way it will be. It will be there." Trivia: Last week’s question was: What year did Jack Kent Cooke become majority owner of the Redskins? (Extra credit: what was the NBA franchise that Cooke owned?) Answer: 1974 and the Los Angeles Lakers. This week’s question: in 1981 Joe Gibbs became head coach, he got off to a terrible start loosing his first ____ games as fans were calling for his ouster, but won ___ out of the last eight games. For extra credit, what was the seasons win loss record? A MESSAGE FROM BOBBE50 Club members arrived at F&F in a very festive mood ready to watch our team play the Bengals.
