Redskins' Playoff Hopes Growing Dimmer With 24-10 Loss to the Baltimore Ravens

The first half of the season there was reason for optimism among Redskins fan at 6-2. The offensive was firing on all cylinders and the defense was strong enough to win. This is not the case now, Sunday’s loss to the Raven was the Redskins fourth loss in five games. Yesterdays loss yielded only one touchdown, and that was in the fourth quarter. With each loss, the playoffs chances get dimmer. Winning out would bring an improvement over last year’s record, it would not guarantee a spot in the playoffs.

With Tampa Bay or Carolina winning their division and the other gaining a wild card berth, the Redskins are facing a three week stretch in which they must sweep Cincinnati, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Even with such a winning streak the Redskins need help from other teams. "Our backs are up against the wall," offensive lineman Pete Kendall said. "I think we're in a position where we have to win out, and we may need some help. It's less than ideal, the way things are trending at this point."

The Redskins are also plagued with injuries, three of them are tackles Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen and safety Chris Horton, all forced out of Sunday night’s game. There is also injured Clinton Portis, who was held to 32 yards on 11 carries, one of which was a fumble.

On the Redskins' third play of the game, Baltimore intercepted a batted pass, setting up a quick 55-yard Ravens touchdown drive. On the Redskins' second possession, the Ravens blocked the punt. The third time Washington got its hands on the ball, Portis fumbled and the Ravens returned the ball for a touchdown, all in just 5:30. On their fourth possession, the Redskins were penalized for taking too much time, then wasted a time out when they got confused, were penalized for a formation violation and finally saw Campbell sacked by Lewis before punting.

Until the fourth quarter, the Redskins were held scoreless. Then they managed 10 points after the defense came up with two turnovers and gave the offense the ball in Ravens territory, however, Redskins defense could not stop the Ravens 12-play, 83-yard touchdown drive that took up nearly eight minutes. The Redskins have fallen behind fast, against quality opponents. A week ago, it took the Giants only five minutes to score a touchdown and less than eighteen minutes to lead 13-0.

Some stats on the Redskins this season: their scoring average to 16.8 points per game, among the worst in the league. In the last five-game, they have failed to score more than one touchdown four times. Since November 3, the Redskins have played four top defenses, the Steelers, Cowboys, Giants and Ravens, and scored only 33 points in those four losses. On the positive side the Redskins defense held Baltimore to only 281 offensive yards.

"It's tough, man," offensive lineman Randy Thomas said. "You got to look at yourself in the mirror and say, 'Are you doing enough to get the job done?' Personally, I don't think I am. I hope other guys feel the same way."

"It's all or nothing now, 3-0 or it's nothing," Campbell said. "We were 6-2. Now we're 7-6. You find that hard to believe. You'd think 9-3, 10-2. It's crazy.”

About the game some of Coach Zorn’s remarks were: "This was really hard. I've taken each game as they've gone, and this was very difficult for me after the game to talk about why and what and how and who's at fault.... We have three games now. It is sudden death. Unfortunately, losing four out of our last five games does not help confidence. We got to dig down deep."

Trivia: Last week’s question was: This week’s question is another quarterback question: In a draft day blunder in 1961, the Redskins select QB Norm Snead in the first round over ___?___. (Hint - he is now in the Hall of Fame.) Answer: Fran Trakington. This week’s question is: What year did Jack Kent Cooke become majority owner of the Redskins? (Extra credit: what was the NBA franchise that Cooke owned?)

A MESSAGE FROM BOBBE

There's not much to say about the Sunday night game other than it was a lackluster performance by our Redskins. There was a golden opportunity for our team to move up a notch but it wasn't to be. A dozen members met at F&F but only two stuck it out past the 3rd quarter. Certainly not the season we envisioned for our team Here's something to look forward to -- next Sunday, December 14th at F&F the club's annual Christmas celebration. Game time is 1 p.m. The gift exchange will be held throughout this game since it takes more time than halftime allows. Remember, BRING A WRAPPED GIFT -- SELECT ANOTHER GIFT. Also, raffle tickets are 3/$5.00 for the great items that members have donated. F&F donated a Redskin sweatshirt to add to this raffle. And be sure to purchase your tickets for the "Billy Kilmer autographed jersey" to be drawn at the Dec. 28th game. You do not need to be present to win, we'll notify the lucky winner. See you Sunday -- F&F -- kickoff 1 p.m. HTTR
