Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 12

December 1, 2008

Redskins lose to the New York Giants, at home 23-7.

The Redskins fall to 7-5, and are now 3-4 at FedEx Stadium. They are still mathematically in the playoff hunt, however, they will need one great December for a NFC Wild Card playoff berth. The Redskins will get a chance to stay in the Wild Card chase next Sunday night, as they play the Baltimore Ravens in a late game. The Ravens defeated the Cincinnati Bengals winning 34-3.

In a reported cold and steady rain, the Redskins proved no match for the Giants. And at halftime, with the Redskins down 13-7, a small portion of the crowd of 85,912 left. More started to leave when Portis was stopped on a fourth down midway through the fourth quarter, and after the Giants' final field goal, the last 6 minutes 20 seconds were played in a virtually empty stadium

The Giants scored on their first three possessions, a touchdown and two field goals. In the second half the Giants had a touchdown and field goal for their 23 points. The Redskins scored just once, on their fourth possession, with a touchdown, for their 7 points. Jason Campbell went 22 of 38 for 222 yards, 59 of them irrelevant against a prevent defense in the closing minutes, and one interception. Eli Manning threw for 305 yards, completeing 21 of 34 passes. Portis had only 22 yards on 11 carries on Sunday.

"They were better than us," Moss said. "That's all you pretty much can say." And Campbell commented: "We are good at short plays and intermediate plays but we haven't had the big plays that can separate a game. We just have to come up with that."

"We're a playoff team but we got to beat some teams that are playoff teams too, otherwise we are fooling ourselves," linebacker London Fletcher lamented.

DUMB PLAY

If one play can capture the fluctuating concentration and madding failure of execution that has beset Washington the last seven games, it came just five minutes into the game after the Giants scored a 40-yard touchdown from Manning to Amani Toomer. On the extra point, all 11 Redskins just stopped playing. I remember watching it and saying to myself “They stopped” After an initial two step rush, special teams simply stopped playing. No one noticed that Giants holder Jeff Feagles had dropped the ball and that place kicker John Carney had stopped in mid-kicking motion. When no one rushed, Feagles eventually put the ball down, Carney kicked it, and barely put the ball over the goal post 20 yards away. Coach Zorn went ballistic."I was very upset with that first extra point. How can you let the holder drop the ball, look around, reset it and still kick it?" said Zorn. "Very upsetting, shouldn't have happened. . . . The first half was like that. Poor execution.” This from the coach.

As the Redskins continued to falter, Coach Jim Zorn raged. At one point he threw his clipboard. Another time he screamed at a ball boy when the dry ball reserved for kickers and punters was not delivered and the Redskins were left to punt with a wet ball. "I just started whining about everything, believe me," Coach Zorn said. "I was on everybody. I was even on myself." Later Coach Zorn said, "I probably need to not get so mad."

An example of how the day when was when rookie Malcolm Kelly had a great opportunity at a long pass but, as Coach Zorn commented after the game, "Bless his heart, it hit him in the chest and (the ball) fell to the ground.”

Now the Redskins find themselves in dire need not merely of a win, but of a winning streak. An interesting stat is that the Redskins have scored 208 points this season, just five more than the 0-12 Lions. And in the NFC East, the Giants, Cowboys and Eagles average 323 points this season, 115 points more than the Redskins.

Tampa Bay and Carolina are in the playoff hunt, one will win the NFC South division, the other team will probably be a wild card. If so, that would leave the Redskins behind Dallas and Atlanta for the second NFC wild card. And less not forget the Eagles, when they come to Washington in three weeks.

Of the Redskins future London Fletcher remarked: "We have made it very interesting for ourselves, where there is not a lot of margin of error left for us. We've got a tough ballgame coming up with the Ravens. Each week it gets harder when you don't win. We've got a tough row to hoe."

"There is still hope for us to get some wins here and get into the playoffs. It's almost like we have to win out. Or at least win three out of four.... Who's to say our season can't take off like the Giants' did last year? The light bulb just turned on for them. Who's to say that can't happen to us?"

Trivia: Last week’s question was: Staying with quarterbacks can you name the two back up quarterbacks on the Redskins rooster and for extra credit what schools did they come from? Answer: Colt Brennan (Hawaii) and Todd Collins (Michigan). This week’s question is another quarterback question: In a draft day blunder in 1961, the Redskins select QB Norm Snead in the first round over ___?___. (Hint - he is now in the Hall of Fame.) (Frank this one is for you.)

A MESSAGE FROM BOBBE

It wasn't a great day for the Redskin faithful as 53 Fan club members watched as our team suffered another loss to the Giants. Missed opportunities and spotty play kept us off the scoreboard at crucial times. With four games left to improve our standings, we need to keep the faith.

The Redskin Room at F&F continues to be full of fans and I thank each of you for the support you give to our Club. Our Club shirt this week was won by Brad and Bob W., Norton and Chuck D. were Trivia winners. I can't say "thank you" enough to Brendan for his work each game on the Trivia game and the game re-cap. Be sure to ask him about his book that has just been published --- a good read for history buffs.
