Redskins leave Seattle with a 3-point victory!

Redskins team remain in wild card race after a squeaker in Seattle. The game was a nail biter until the last 1:26, when Shawn Springs intercepted a Matt Hasselbeck pass, a play after Ladell Betts fumbled at the Seattle 22 yard line. "It was a terrible feeling. The defense bailed me out big-time." Betts later commented.

Both teams scored a touchdown, one in each half, the difference in the game was that the Redskins scored two field goals to Seattle’s one.

Coach Zorn came back to his playing and coaching stomping grounds and won a game the Redskins absolutely had to have. The Seahawks scored their final points, a touchdown, with 13:24 remaing in the game. From that point the Redskins ran 21 of the next 25 offensive plays. The first 10 offensive plays set up Suisham's second field goal with 9:19 left to provide the winning points; the final 11 offensive plays used 5:37 of clock before Betts' fumble. "We were trying to do right and keep the ball in our possession," Zorn said. "Ladell tried to strain for that extra yard. He got on somebody's back, and they ripped the ball out."

Tthe Redskins gained 386 yards, converting seven of 15 third-downs and allowed only two sacks. Six players caught at least two passes, led by Cooley's five receptions for 54 yards. Campbell completed 20 of 33 attempts for 206 yards and rushed six times for 32 yards.

Commenting on his team’s performance Coach Zorn said: "I was ready to do some head coaching. I wanted to make sure our team was into it. And they were. There wasn't a letdown of effort or focus. I didn't have to say anything."

"We have to use it as something that will move us in the right direction," tight end Chris Cooley said of the game. "The rest of our schedule is extremely tough against tough defenses, so I hope this will be huge for us."

"I told [Hasselbeck] when the clock ran out, 'We finally got you,'" cornerback Fred Smoot said. "We haven't had a lot of luck here. It took us coming here and stealing a coach to win here." This is reference to 2005 and 2007, when the Redskins lost both playoffs games to the Seahawks at Seattle.

Zorn played quarterback for the Seahawks and was on Seattle's coaching staff for seven seasons and the teams only appearance to a Super Bowl. A video presentation documenting his career was played before the game, and Zorn's wife, Joy, and two of his daughters accepted his enshrinement into the Washington state sports hall of fame. Coach Jim Zorn and No. 10 are in the Seahawks' Ring of Honor.

"To come home and face Mike Holmgren and that team and the coaches I know so well and achieve this, it's cool," Zorn said.

"I think the game meant a lot to him because this is the place where he played at for many years and he has a great relationship with a lot of guys," Campbell said. "Those guys over there competed very hard today. A lot of that had to do with Coach Zorn being back in town. They wanted to beat us, and we wanted to beat them for Coach Zorn."

The Seahawks might have been the franchise that gave him his playing and coaching start; they were also the franchise where former coach Chuck Knox and former GM Tom Flores told him to start in high school or college, because they did not think he was head-coach or offensive-coordinator material. It was reported that a Seattle columnist yesterday admitted he never saw Zorn in a head coaching position, saying his quirkiness and eccentricity might “light a spark at the start but that Zorn was probably not cut out for any of the prima-donna drama of the NFL” or, assuming command of a NFL team.

"To come back here and to see so many friends was great," Zorn said. "It was hard before the game because I did know a lot of people. I did want to say hi to a bunch of people. I just tried to keep from making it a distraction."

The Redskins needed this win to stay alive in the NFC play-off hunt. There’s Washington (7-4), Dallas (7-4) and two teams among the NFC South trio of Carolina (8-3), Tampa Bay (8-3) and Atlanta (7-4) playing for two wild-card berths. Next the Redskins host the 10-1 New York Giants, a game that represents the Redskins' last chance to make the NFC Eastern division race close.

Trivia: Last week’s question was: What college did Jason Campbell graduate from? Answer - Auburn. Staying with quarterbacks can you name the two back up quarterbacks on the Redskins rooster and for extra credit what schools did they come from?
