Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 10Redskins lose to Cowboys, 14-10 Continuing to show an inability to finish drives, the Redskins fell to the Dallas Cowboys 14-10. The Redskins continue to struggle on offense in their second loss in a row before 90,830 fans. Redskins had high hopes with a 6-2 start, and are still in the running for a playoff berth, but considering the battle between the NFC East rivals this lost will make it tougher on the Redskins. The loss cost the Redskins sole possession of second place in the NFC East and just one game away from being removed from the playoff picture. "We're putting ourselves in a tough situation," left tackle Chris Samuels said. "We haven't played great lately, we haven't done the things we know we can do, but it is what it is. We've got to play better and get the job done." Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts played despite still being hampered by knee injuries. Against the Steelers the Redskins had 221 and against the Cowboys had 228 yards. Portis had 68 yards on 15 rushes. Betts, who missed three games because of a sprained knee, had one yard on one rush and 27 yards on two receptions. About the game and the team performance center Casey Rabach commented: “This group has a lot of confidence. We see what we're capable of, and we know what we're capable of. It's about execution. Each one of us has to look at themselves and ask, 'Did we play our football?' If not, then we have to start doing it.” Coach Zorn lamented: “This is the time of the season where those teams that are going upward start making that climb. And we're not making the climb.” The Redskins on their first possession of the game scored a touchdown. “We were really happy starting the way we did,” Rabach said. “We just have to keep that momentum and keep going. We had a lull after that and it definitely hurt us.” The Redskins' defense produced two interceptions in the first half, but did not convert the turnovers into points on the board. In the second quarter Dallas scored a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. The Redskins got a big play from special team member Rock Cartwright when he returned a kickoff 58 yards to the Dallas 37. Four plays later, Shaun Suisham kicked a 41-yard field goal just before halftime. Neither team could establish a consistent rhythm on offense in a scoreless third quarter. The Redskins reached the Dallas 17, on the second possession of the third quarter, before losing 11 yards and Suisham's field goal attempt fall short. The Redskins started the fourth quarter with a 10-7 lead. Dallas' first fourth-quarter possession gave the Cowboys their second touchdown and the lead. Cowboys scored the winning touchdown with 10:36 remaining. Later the Cowboys' defense made a big play. With the Redskins on the Cowboys’ 37 yard line and needing four yards on fourth down. Jason Campbell's pass fell incomplete with 6:40 left to play They never got the ball back. The Cowboys burned up the remaining time, with 10 rushes, one pass completion and Romo kneeling down twice to run out the clock. “We threw punches, they threw punches and they got the last punch,” cornerback Fred Smoot said. “They knocked us out. We didn't rise to the occasion on offense or defense. There's nobody to blame. They made plays. We didn't....We didn't make enough plays. We didn't get to Romo enough, and we didn't intercept enough passes. We shouldn't have let them come in and do this. But we did, and we have to pick it up and get moving.” "They scored a touchdown, and we did not answer," Coach Zorn said. "We had to answer with another touchdown, and we couldn't do it." Clinton Portis started the game and reached the 1,000-yard mark of the season on his first carry. “Clinton's a warrior, and he played his butt off, no doubt banged up, and did good things for us,” Rabach said. Campbell completed 22 of 34 passes but only had 162 yards. Although the Redskins have put themselves in a tough spot to qualify for the playoffs, now is not the time to panic Campbell warned. "We have six more games left in the season. We have to take 'em one game at a time, because we're really playing for our season," Campbell said in an after game interview. Trivia: The last question was: Who was the Redskins coach between Joe Gibbs (first time) and Norv Turner? Anser: Richie Petibtbon - 1993. This week’s question is more current: What college did Jason Campbell graduate from? A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEThe loss of the game was a real dampener to what had been a great Tailgate Party. With just 6 games remaining, we need our team to get back on the winning track. After all, we want play to continue into January. So get it together guys. Next opponent is Seattle -- let's NOT repeat that last game with them. We'll keep the faith !A delicious buffet was set out by Julie of the River Club Restaurant assisted by her son, Ray. A big "thank you" to them and to Dan Conrad, manager of the River Club for organizing our event. Our menu consisted of barbeque pork sandwiches, 3 flavors of meatballs, cole slaw, macaroni salad, baked beans, chips, fresh baked cookies and a beautifully decorated sheet cake. Beer, sodas and iced tea were also included. There was enough food to feed an army ! We had 42 members turn out in support of our Club -- I do wish more of you could have made it. Maybe next year ? We have an autographed "Billy Kilmer" jersey that one LUCKY member is going to WIN on Dec. 28th at our last regular season game. Tickets are 3/$10.00 ---- PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR CLUB. December 14th has been selected as our traditional Holiday game. The Christmas Raffle still needs items but we will start selling tickets this week. They are 3/$5.00. We'll keep our fingers crossed that each of you have something "special" that you will be bringing in for this Holiday Raffle. In addition to the raffle our "gift exchange" will also take place. The gift exchange works like this ---- bring in a wrapped gift (value approx. $15.00) and you'll receive a ticket. When your ticket number is called you go and select a gift. Members do not have to participate in the gift exchange but it is quite fun to see the unusual gift ideas ! We are in the process of trying to work something out with F&F for refreshments on this game day. Stay tuned. A reminder ..... Our treasury has spent quite a bit of it's income from raffles this year buying items to keep the raffle going. With MORE donations from YOU we could build our treasury to a point that would enable us to cover the higher costs we are finding in hosting parties for the Club. Think about it. Our goal has always been to give back to our members by hosting these special parties. Let's find a way to continue to do so. A little "hello" to Phyllis, Rees, and Donna who I know regularly click on the website to catch up on the latest club news. We miss seeing you and would love to see you turn out for a game soon. Take care. NEXT GAME -- Sunday, Nov. 23 Kickoff 4:15 pm See you at F&F HTTR
