Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 09The Pittsburgh Steelers handed the Redskins its worst loss of the season, with a score of 23-6. Washington enters its bye week with a loss before a crowd that included an estimated 30,000 “Terrible Towel” waving Steelers fans. "There was a lot of 'em," Campbell said. "I was definitely surprised to see that many of them in our home stadium." The Redskins scored quickly with two field goals in the first four minutes. They recovered a Steelers surprise onside kick, and the second came when Cornelius Griffin intercepted a tipped pass. Washington didn't convert a third down until late in the third quarter. That was the Redskins first two positions and the end of Redskins scoring. The Steelers then went on a 23 point rampage. “We had such great position early in the ball game and to go three-and-out and kick a field goal, three-and-out and kick a field goal was super frustrating,” Zorn said. The Redskins had ten more drives in the game: six punts, a blocked punt, the end of the first half, an interception and a turnover on downs at the Pittsburgh 1-yard line. In the second quarter, the Redskins gained only 7 yards. "We were hoping to go out and play our football, play smash-mouth football," Portis said. "Instead, we got smashed." On the game Coach Zorn commented: “The thing I know, when you play a team like this, when you have the little opportunity, you have to take advantage of them. We didn't, and we paid for it.” “They were relentless,” Campbell said of the Steelers. “They wouldn't bend at all, even when we got down to the goal line. It was a good test to play them, and now we've seen a lot of the things we need to improve on.” The Steelers' defense had seven sacks and became the first team this season to intercept quarterback Jason Campbell. Campbell went 24-of-43 for 206 yards and his streak without an interception reached 271 attempts -- 249 this season -- before Steelers cornerback Deshea Townsend grabbed a pass tipped by Portis late in the third quarter. The Redskins' 221 yards were their fewest since Week 1 and well below their average of 364.3 a game. Pittsburgh sacked Campbell seven times. Portis' streak of five consecutive games with a least 120 games ended with only 51 yards on 13 carries. The Redskins came close to scoring a touchdown only once, when Campbell threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal at the 1 in the fourth quarter. One of the Steelers field goals was set up by a 43 yard pass interference penalty on Carlos Rogers. This was the Redskins' longest penalty of the year. The only Redskins injury was to defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery, a strained Achilles. The next Redskin game is at home against Dallas on Nov. 16. Trivia: The last question was: In 1933 there were only ten teams in the NFL; only five survive to this day. Name the five. Hint: Redskins are playing one of them on Monday night. Answer: Steelers, Chicago Cardinals (Arizona), Green Bay, Chicago Bears and the New York Giants. New Question: Who was the Redskins coach between Joe Gibbs (first time) and Norv Turner? Note: Since the inception of the Redskins, actually 1940, the following quirky statistic has held. If the Redskins win their last home game before the election, the political party in power stays in power. If the Redskins lose, the party in power has lost. Think of that on Wednesday morning! A MESSAGE FROM BOBBE15 members were ready and waiting as the game began at 8:30 p.m. Four minutes into the game we had already sang "Hail To The Redskins" twice BUT then, SILENCE! Not a game we really want to remember. Maybe with the next two weeks off the Redskins can regroup and come out strong for the remaining seven games and earn the right to play football in January. Our next game is November 16th against Dallas and the club will host its Annual Tailgate Party at the River Club in Lakewood Ranch at 6:30 p.m. 55 members, so far, have announced their intention to attend and I will accept phone reservations (708-6555) until Monday, Nov. 10th. My number of attendees will then be given to the banquet manager at the River Club. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND. The club will also view the Skins/Dallas game there at the River Club and cheer our team on to another win over those Cowboys. When we return to F&F on 11/23 we will kick off our SPECIAL CHRISTMAS RAFFLE. Please bring your donations so they can be displayed and Peggy can get ticket sales underway. Enjoy the week. See you 11/16 at the River Club for Tailgate 2008. HTTROne of the fun features of our annual Christmas Party is the voluntary gift exchange. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange, here is how it works. Bring a WRAPPED gift with an approximate value of $15 to the party. It DOES NOT have to be Redskins related. You will be given a ticket similar to our raffle tickets for each gift you bring. During the party, tickets numbers will be called and when your number is called you go to the gift table and select from those available. In the past, there have been a great variety of gifts including adult beverages, holiday fare of all descriptions, fancy packages of cheeses, nuts, candies, etc. as well as some Redskin items. Remember, this feature is voluntary; if you bring a gift you receive a gift. Also consider some creative gift wrapping as this adds an element of suspense when trying to decide which gift to select! Bobbe is planning the Christmas party now with a tentative date of December 14th which is a 1:00pm away game against the Bengals. Watch for further details in the newsletter!
