Redskins beat Lions

The Redskins are 6-2 for the first time since 2000, as they defeated the Detroit Lions 25-17. Commenting on the game and what it means Coach Zorn said: "Now this is the push here where the teams begin to define themselves halfway through the season. We're hoping that we can keep this thing going."

The highlight of the game had to be Santana Moss’ 80 yard punt return early in the fourth quarter. Moss had nine receptions for 140 yards, including a 50 yard TD that put the Redskins ahead 16-10 (in the third quarter).

Jason Campbell was 23-of-28 for a season-high 328 yards with a touchdown and a career-high 127.4 passer rating. Campbell hasn't thrown an interception in his 202 passes in his eight games. Going back to last year, Campbell has a franchise record of 224 consecutive passes without an interception. "Honestly I try to not think about it," Campbell said. "It's the longest streak I've ever had, but I try to go out, play the game and let the game come to me." What Campbell did in the passing game is a direct result of what running back Clinton Portis did on the ground. He ran for 126 yards, and now has five straight games of 120 yards or more.

There was an exchange of words between Zorn and Portis on the bench because the running back was having problems with his equipment when the Redskins had the ball and the coach didn't know he wasn't available. "He just misunderstood the situation and we had a sweet exchange of words," Zorn said. "It was the heat of the game for me. "We just came to an understanding. We talked about it at halftime. We talked about it in front of the team." "It wasn't nothing major. It was just miscommunication," Portis said of the exchange. "I regret that it happened because I never want someone to feel like I wasn't there."

Redskin’s kicker Shaun Suisham kicked four field goals, including a 42-yarder with 1:56 to go that put the Redskins up by eight points and concluded a drive that took almost five minutes. The Lions got the ball at its own 23 yard line with no timeouts left however, the drive ended near midfield with a failed fourth down.

Coach Zorn is hoping to build momentum heading into the second half of the season. He commented: “We were 3-1 in our first four games, and 3-1 in our second four. So we're feeling really solid about our record. Now this is the push where the teams begin to define themselves. And so we’re hoping that we can keep this thing going.”

From a scheduling point of view Washington looks to be in a good position. There toughest games in the second half of the season are home games, with Pittsburgh, Dallas, New York Giants and Philadelphia (these teams have a combined record of 20-9). And the four away games are with Seattle, Baltimore, Cincinnati and San Francisco (with a combined record of 8-22).

The Redskins next play a Monday night game against the Steelers, and finally after nine regular season games, the Redskins have their bye week. “We’ve been going through a long road,” Jason Campbell said. “You are talking about a total of 14 games straight (five preseason plus nine regular games) before we even get a break. It’s definitely to the point where we have to stay strong before we get to the bye week....Guys are getting a lot of bumps and bruises, including myself. This team has to continue to push through before we even think about getting to our bye week.”

After the bye, the Redskins host the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. The Cowboys will also be coming off a bye week. After the Cowboys, the Redskins travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks. Of note on this game is that Coach Zorn played quarterback for the Seahawks from 1976-84 and served as an assistant coach there from 2001-07.

For now, the Redskins need win the Steelers game, then recuperate with a well deserved bye week.

Trivia: The last question was: In 1973, the Redskins played in Super Bowl VII. Who did they play? Who won? Who was the coach? Who was the quarterback? The Redskins lost to the Dolphins 14-7, with George Allen as head coach and Billy Kilmer as quarterback. In 1933 there were only ten teams in the NFL, only five survive to this day. Name the five. Hint: Redskins are playing one of them on Monday night.

A MESSAGE FROM BOBBE

It's great putting another check mark in the WIN column but wouldn't you like to see some "flag free football"? It seems like after every big play we hold our breath waiting for the "flag" to be thrown. It's happening too much! But we are 6-2 and that's worth a "Hail to the Redskins". Keep it up Skins!

This week 59 members were in attendance and once again we rocked the Redskin Room. Trivia winners were: Linda, Steve O. (2) and Jimmy. Thanks to everyone for participating and to Brendan for managing the Trivia game every week. Our raffle got a boost when F&F donated a very special tailgate size grill which many of our members would have liked to have won. The lucky winner was Brad and he had lots of offers to take it off his hands but he smiled all the way out the door. Congratulations Brad and all our winners. Another "thank you" to long time member, Fran, for donating several items from the Hall Of Fame Ceremonies she attended. These items will be in future raffles. Fan Club shirts were given to our 4 lucky members who won them earlier this season. Thanks to Joan of "Embroidered Image" for getting them to us so quickly.

A REMINDER: Our next game is Monday, 11/3 at F&F beginning 8:30 pm against the Steelers. The following week is our bye week. THEN, Sunday, Nov. 16th is our TAILGATE PARTY, 6:30 pm at the River Club 6600 River Club Blvd (Lakewood Ranch) followed by the SKINS/DALLAS game at 8:15 pm.
