Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 07Redskins bring their record to 5-2. Clinton Portis is the NFL's leading rusher, gained another 175 yards and scored a touchdown in Washington Redskins 14-11 victory. Portis averaged 6.5 yards on 27 carries despite an aggravated hip flexor. It was the fourth consecutive 120 yard plus game for Portis, a first for him since the 2003 season with the Denver Broncos. ''I think Clinton Portis is an absolute workhorse and our offensive line takes pride in that,'' said Zorn. Portis yardage on Sunday brought his season total to 818 yards. Portis only error of the game came with 5:36 remaining. When Browns cornerback Eric Wright stripped the ball away from him from behind and safety Brodney Pool grabbed it before he was knocked out of bounds. This led to Cleveland’s only touchdown. Of this play Portis commented: ''All I could think was, '97 yards. I could see the end zone and I thought I could get there. [Wright] made a good play on the ball.'' High praise came for Portis by Jon Jansen saying: ''There are games we make [Portis] look good, and games where he makes us look good. We were built for the run.'' The game's first 14 possessions ended in 13 punts and a missed field goal, then Portis broke the scoreless tie with a 3-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter. The Browns scored a field goal, with the Redskins answering quickly with their second touchdown, for a score of 14-3. Unable to score despite a first-and-goal at the 1, (losing the ball on 4th down), the Browns got the ball back after Portis' fumble, scored there only touchdown and added a 2-point conversion, for a score of 14-11. In the next possession the Redskins punted and the Browns drove to the Washington 36 in the final minute, with 25 seconds remaining in the game Cleveland missed a 54 yard field goal. The situation was similar to last week’s Rams game, when the Redskins lost on a 49-yard kick on the game's last play. "Very nervous," cornerback Fred Smoot said. "Especially after last week's field goal, which broke my heart. Once I saw it go to the right, it was a relief." Said Zorn: ''We feel very fortunate. . . . I think teams are coming to stop our run, but we're staying with it. We've talked about balance, and I think that the mix of the run and pass and the mix of the different kinds of things is keeping them guessing....What I'm trying to do is keep them guessing. We had balance today. It didn't show up on the scoreboard as much as we would have liked it to.'' Other noteworthy quick comments about the game. Santana Moss caught four passes for 75 yards. Shaun Alexander, signed by the Redskins on Tuesday, had three carries for 8 yards. With a great performance by middle linebacker London Fletcher and missing injured cornerback Shawn Springs, the defense gave up only 236 yards. Carlos Rogers, nursing a calf injury, had a great game. Jason Campbell went 14-for-23 for 164 yards, and hasn't thrown an interception all season. The Redskins' streak of 332 regular-season pass attempts without an interception surpasses the previous NFL team record of 281 set by Oakland in 2001. Campbell's individual streak is 224, short of Bernie Kosar's streak of 308. Campbell injured his groin when his foot slipped while attempting a pass in the first quarter. However, he played out the game. Trivia: The last question was: Who is the founder of the Washington Redskins? Answer George Preston Marshall. This weeks question: In 1973, the Redskins played in Super Bowl VII. Who did they play? Who won? Who was the coach? Who was the quarterback? A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEWhat a nail biter of a game! After both teams went back and forth in the first half, you just knew something would break out in the second half. A nice victory for our SKINS!Sorry that the newsletter last week didn't include Brendan's game summary. No one to blame; just a slip up in the system. Where were YOU this week? Our attendance dropped to 55 -- we were loud and strong in celebrating but we missed the Redskin Room being packed. The Club shirt was won by Kyle and we thought we might need to call an armored car to escort Peggy home since she won 3 or the 4 quarters in the Trivia game. Mel was the lucky winner of the final score. We want to thank F&F for donating the appetizer platters to our raffle this week. Please plan on being part of our Redskin Rooters EACH and EVERY game.
