Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 05Suddenly the Redskins are a team to be reckoned with, a bona fide playoff team in the NFL’s most difficult division. The Redskins went on the road to Dallas and won, then on the road to Philadelphia and won. In both games the Redskins had a big edge in time of possession, won after an early deficit, no turnovers, ran the ball well, had only three penalties for 24 yards, gave up only one sack and had great clock management in the final minutes of the games. In addition, the Redskins haven't turned the ball over on offense in any of their five games this season. In other words they did nothing to beat themselves. The season is young and there is still a lot of football left, but the promise is there and Jason Campbell is improving, in the west coast offense of Coach Zorn, weekly. The Redskins were behind two touchdowns and quarterback Jason Campbell had not completed a pass in a scoreless first quarter. As left tackle Chris Samuels put it: "He (Zorn) always tells us, 'Never too high, never too low, no matter what happens in a game. I'm telling you, after hearing him and watching him all the time, I don't think anybody on the sideline had any doubt about what we would do.” The Redskins extended their winning streak to four games in front of 69, 144 screaming Eagle fans. After the Eagles first possession (80 yards - 12 plays) for a touchdown, and a 68 yard punt return for a touchdown, the Eagles were held to a mere field goal from that point on. While the Redskins scored 23 straight points. They also had an advantage in time of possession of almost ten minutes. Philadelphia produced 119 total yards in the first quarter, and only 135 yards the rest of the game. Of the Redskins 388 total yards 203 were yards rushing. Portis rushed for a season high of 145 yards, for a 5.0 yard average, and one touchdown. About Clinton, Campbell said: "Clinton is running the ball like a mad man right now. The offensive line is just doing an outstanding job of giving him an opportunity to get those rushes, and also giving me time to throw the ball." Campbell had his fewest yards passing (176) in a Redskins win, however, he did set a Washington Redskins record with 175 consecutive passes without an interception, breaking Joe Theismann’s record of 161. Redskin kicker Shaun Suisham made all three of his first-half field-goal attempts (41, 48 and 50 yards), extending his streak without a miss to seven. The Redskins did all of this without three starters on the defensive side of the ball: end Jason Taylor, linebacker Marcus Washington and cornerback Shawn Springs. "In this business, there's always somebody nicked. The next guy has got to stand up and fill the void when we're missing someone. And that's what we did today. We went out and played 11 men as one, no egos, no individuals." said defensive end Andre Carter, who finished with a team-leading six tackles. Defensive coordinator Greg Blache had a lot to say about his defense: "We feel like we can always plug guys in with this defense. Our defense is built like an old automobile. You can replace an old belt here and a fuel pump there and keep on going. We don't have to have computer chips and all that. This is a defense you can fix on the back 40 ... with a couple sticks of chewing gum and a roll of duct tape." Fred Smoot (safety), H.B. Blades (linebacker) and Demetric Evans (end) started in place of the three injured starters. Of the three, Smoot made the greatest impact, with four solo tackles. The 29-year-old Smoot started his first four seasons with the Redskins (2001-04), then went to the Minnesota Vikings and now back with the Redskins, the team that drafted him out of Mississippi State. "It feels so good to be part of this family again," Smoot said. "I'm definitely more humble this time around; more appreciative of every minute I get to play football." Smoot praised his team when he said nobody on the Redskins' panicked when Philadelphia returned a punt for a score of 14-0. "I've been on this team when guys would have had their heads down after that. Not this team. We just looked up and thought, 'OK, now it's time to turn it on.' I can't tell you how good it feels to play for a team which is also a family. This isn't a team of individuals, and I know because I've been one of those guys on more than one of those teams. That was just 11 guys out there playing Redskins football as a team." Of Greg Blache, Andre Carter said: "He's awesome to play for, absolutely the best. The first thing he said to us was, 'You guys are grown men and professionals. Behave like that and I'll never treat you otherwise.' He's not the kind of guy who is going to [scream and curse at] you. He's much more subtle than that. But he doesn't miss a thing when it comes to preparation. I think he's totally changed the group mind-set of this defense. "There was only one injury report from the game; defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, sprained his right shoulder. Trivia: The last question was: How many seasons has the Redskins played in Washington? Answer: 72nd Season, first game played September 16, 1937. This week’s question: Who is the founder of the Washington Redskins? A MESSAGE FROM BOBBEDon't you just love the way our team is getting the job done. Down at the half and then the rally for another VICTORY! A great win celebrated by 60+ fans at F&F again this week. The seating was rearranged in an effort to give every fan a good view of the TV's which I might add were in sync this week. Our servers, Jessica and Brian, made sure that food and beverage service ran smoothly. These were a couple of the things discussed with F&F management this past week and you can see how they are really making an effort to accommodate our wishes. One thing that cannot be changed is the number of fans that can be seated in the Redskin Room. Fire regulations permit 60 and that must be followed. F&F will place other tables and chairs in the pool table area when needed. We hope all of you will continue to turn out. It is great having the Redskin Room rocking the rafters.Congratulations to our Trivia winners: Andy, Steve O, Charles and Mel. We are running low on raffle items and want to remind you that items do not have to be Redskin/football related. For each raffle item you bring in, you will receive a free raffle ticket for that day’s drawing. Remember too that money earned on these raffles enables the club to host three separate parties throughout the season. Speaking of which -- we are scheduling the TAILGATE PARTY for Sunday, October 19th at F&F to begin at 3 p.m. Circle the date NOW. Meanwhile, see you next week as our team faces the Rams at 1 p.m. HTTR
