Bradenton Redskins Fan Club Newsletter, Volume 13 Number 02The Washington Redskins and their new West Coast offense (emphasizing short, quick passes to control the ball) succeeded with the New Orleans Saints when they couldn’t against the Giants. Campbell went from horrible to great, completing 24 of 36 passes for 321 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, in Washington's 29-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints. The Redskins finished with 455 total yards. Prior to Sunday there was a gloom over Washington, as the Redskins had a 16-7 loss to the Giants, (a Thrusday night game) that was much more one side than the score indicated. This game was like many other Redskins games: drawn out and ugly that looked like it was destined to be lost, only to have the Redskins put another check mark in the win column at the last moments of the game. This is the team that last year struggled with a 5-7 start and the death of Sean Taylor, only to win its last four games and make the play-offs. With 10 minutes left in the game, the Saints were leading 24-15. The Redskins had missed two field goals, a failed two point conversion, missed opportunities, missed passes and appeared unable to stop the Saints offense. At half time the Redskins were booed (at home) trailing 10-9, and it was only to get worse, much to the detriment of this writer’s blood pressure. Then the Redskins came to life. The Redskins moved the ball downfield to score a touchdown. Now the score was 24-22. Then, with 3:38 left, Jason Campbell threw a long pass to wide receiver Santana Moss, who caught the ball and raced into the end zone for a 67-yard score. About his quarterback, Coach Zorn commented: "I think he grew this whole week. He just continued what he was doing from the first half to the second. He didn't hit every throw that was there and I was frustrated because I want him to hit 100 percent of his throws, right?" After the game Coach Zorn said that one of the most important plays of the day -- a fourth-down completion from Campbell to Moss was suggested by offensive assistant Chris Meidt. (Coach Meidt had spent the last six years coaching St. Olaf College in Minnesota). Redskins’ offensive lineman Pete Kendall said: "The game's not over and the season's not over until it is really over. If we didn't learn that last year we won't ever learn that." Jason Taylor agreed. "It's very difficult to win the game in the first quarter or the second quarter or the third quarter. That's the way this league is made." Who will show up next week: the team that struggled with the Giants and the first three quarters with the Saints, or the team we saw in the fourth quarter? Trivia: Last week’s question was: What was the name of the new Redskins stadium from 1996-1999? Answer: Jack Kent Cooke Stadium. This week’s question: In this year’s depth chart, who is the third quarterback? Brendan Egan, Newsletter Reporter
